VA Blue

March 4, 2014

One reason why VA is becoming blue, 1 out of 9 foreign.

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) — University of Virginia researchers say Virginia’s foreign-born population is growing and now comprises 15 percent of the state’s workforce.

The Weldon Cooper for Public Service’s Demographics Research Group says one in nine Virginians was born outside of the United States, compared to one in 100 in 1970.

A Census Brief released Tuesday by the research group shows El Salvador is the top country of birth for immigrants to Virginia, followed by India, Mexico, the Philippines and South Korea.

The Northern Virginia metropolitan statistical area, or MSA, is home to almost 70 percent of Virginia’s foreign-born population.

Researcher Shonel Sen says almost one-fifth of children under age 18 who were born in Virginia have at least one foreign-born parent.
